In politics, the primary responsibility of elected representatives is to serve the needs of the people they represent. However, it has become increasingly evident that many politicians have distanced themselves from the daily struggles and concerns of their constituents by residing in the capital city, Abuja, rather than in their own constituencies. It is imperative that Nigerians demand that their elected representatives spend at least three weeks every month in their constituencies, and this is made possible through the use of technology. This article, inspired by the Ooni’s address to the 19th joint assembly, aims to highlight the importance of politicians residing in their constituencies, emphasizing the benefits it brings and urging Nigerians to call for this essential change. Now is the time to make the demand for the following reasons.
- Understanding and Addressing Constituent Issues:
By residing and spending significant time in their constituencies, politicians gain direct experience and knowledge of the unique challenges faced by their followers. This physical presence allows them to fully comprehend the problems and concerns of the people they represent, enabling them to respond effectively. It promotes empathy and a stronger connection between the politician and the community, resulting in more well-informed policy decisions. - Strengthening Constituency Representation:
When politicians live among their constituents, it enhances the effectiveness of their representation. Through experiencing the daily realities of their communities, politicians can advocate more genuinely and passionately for the interests of their constituents. They become familiar with local issues, economic challenges, and social dynamics, enabling them to champion specific policies and initiatives that cater to the specific needs of their constituencies. - Promoting Accountability and Transparency:
Residing in their constituencies promotes accountability and transparency in the political process. Politicians become more accessible to their followers, creating more opportunities for dialogue and constructive engagement. This leads to a more participatory democracy, where constituents can actively voice their concerns and hold their representatives accountable for their actions. Moreover, it serves as a deterrent to corruption and unethical practices, as politicians are closely monitored by the community they live in. - Fostering Grassroots Development:
Politicians who reside in their constituencies are more likely to prioritize and invest in local development. They can witness firsthand the infrastructural gaps, healthcare challenges, educational deficits, and other pressing issues that require attention. By being physically present, politicians can work closely with community leaders, participate in grassroots initiatives, and effectively allocate resources towards development projects that directly impact the lives of their constituents. - Reducing Insecurity:
If politicians reside in their constituencies, they will be exposed to similar risks instead of residing in their safe haven in Abuja. This helps in addressing security concerns more effectively. - Cost-Effectiveness for the Country:
Residing in the constituencies means that every elected representative only needs temporary accommodation in Abuja, leading to cost savings in the long run. With the use of technology, they can attend secure virtual meetings.
It is essential for Nigerians to demand that their elected representatives reside in their constituencies. This critical change will result in a more responsive, accountable, and transparent political system. Politicians who live among their constituents are better positioned to understand and address the issues faced by the people they represent. It is time to eliminate the detachment between politicians and their communities. Together, let us advocate for the return of politicians to their respective constituencies to ensure that the voices and needs of the people are heard and addressed.
